Advanced Quantum Mechanics

This is a bachelor course which deals with advanced topics in quantum mechanics. The rough program will include:

  • Systems of identical particles (two electron systems, helium atom)
  • Time dependent Hamiltonians and time dependent perturbation theory
  • Atoms in electromagnetic fields
  • Elements of quantum theory of radiation
  • Foundations of scattering theory
  • Scattering of identical particles

GENERAL INFORMATION

The first lecture will be on Monday, April 15th.

The first exercise classes will be during the third week (May 2nd).

Lecture times: Monday 14:15 - 15:45, room 5101.EG.501 (Rudolf-Mößbauer-Hörsaal)

Bibliography:

There will be hand-written lecture notes (in English) uploaded regularly on this website (see below). Lecture notes are not to be considered a substitute for a good quantum mechanics book (even better, more than one!). Here are some suggestions from which different parts of the lectures will take inspiration:

  • Modern Quantum Mechanics (J.J. Sakurai)
  • The Physics of Quantum Mechanics (J Binney, D. Skinner)
  • Principles of Quantum Mechanics (R. Shankar)
  • The Principles of Quantum Mechanics (P. Dirac)
  • Quantum Physics (S. Gasiorowicz)
  • Lectures on Quantum Mechanics (S. Weinberg)
  • Quantum Mechanics: Non-Relativistic Physics (L.D. Landau, E.M. Lifshitz)

TUTORIAL CLASSES

Here you find relevant information on the tutorial groups

Tutorial times:

  • Group 1 Thursday 8:30  - 10:00 in room 5123.EG.019 (LMU-Hörsaal)
  • Group 2 Thursday 16:15 - 17:45 in room 5101.EG.501 (Rudolf-Mößbauer-Hörsaal)

Please fill up this doodle (https://terminplaner6.dfn.de/en/e/e3c2fee7fe524481533dbc3567e07d34-685065) to indicate which tutorials slot work for you. If they both work, please indicate both. We will reassign you to try and have evenly distributed students. Registration is mandatory.

IMPORTANT INFO:

The Tutorial on Thursday May 9th will be moved to May 8th (Wednesday) in C3202 at from 14:15 - 16:00.

EXAM

Information on the Exams

The exam will we written or oral, depending on the number of students registered.

There will be a bonus of 0.3 with the following requirements:

  • the student must attend all exercise classes (attendance is mandatory!), unless a reason is given to the tutors.
  • the student must attempt a solution of all exercise sheets (there will be only one every two weeks!)
  • the student must hand in correct solutions for at least 50% of the exercise sheets (a solution is considered "correct" if more than half of the exercise sheet has been properly worked out).
